1839/43 |
Victoria. Compare with BMC 1523. 39 struck over 43 in the date. Reverse upright.
Collectors are not generally aware that 1839 Proof Sets were made to order by the Royal
Mint in years later than that stated on the coin. By the mid-1840s, it was deemed that the
1839 halfpenny die was no longer serviceable, for whatever reason, and therefore an 1843
halfpenny die was employed, suitably altered. Traces of this altered date are visible on
close inspection. The Royal Mint have confirmed that altered dates may exist in the
Proofs. A few, light surface marks, Good Extremely Fine, extremely rare. Purchased from
Spink Numismatic Circular, September 1985, item 5922, £125.

1841 |
Victoria. BMC -- . Lowest limb of E in DEI is broken to resemble F. The reverse is
Inverted, not recorded in the main texts. Dr Nicholson notes:
"A similar coin surfaced in Spink Numismatic Circular, Dec 1984 item 8031
(repeated December 1994, presumably same coin, item 8213) described as "only VF but
apparently unrecorded and very rare"."
Our further researches indicate some more references: Spink Numismatic Circular, October
1969, Page 332 (photo), by Mr Radage. Spink Numismatic Circular, May 1973, article by Paul
Withers. British Numismatic Journal, Volume 36 (1967), wherein Peck added the example
owned by Mr E. H. White, London, in red mint condition. Some of these references will
undoubtedly refer to the same coin. We leave it to the next owner of this coin to
rationalise the references quoted above and determine how many examples are extant.

Victoria. BMC 2082. Pattern Two Cents in Copper by Marrian and Gausby. Reverse inverted,
therefore an original striking and not one of the much commoner re-strikes. Thickness 2mm.
Well struck. No rust. Very Fine or better, small edge knock at 10pm on the obverse,
patchily toning. Extremely rare as an original striking. Purchased from Aston Coins,

|
1847 |
Victoria. BMC 1531. Dr Nicholson notes that there is a
"Large 7 in the date". To this cataloguer, it does
not appear overly large, as close inspection reveals the 7 is re-entered on the die over a
somewhat lower 7, thereby creating the illusion of being larger than usual. The coin
exhibits no actual wear but is clearly struck from worn dies and the Mint deemed it
necessary to re-inforce the datal figure by re-cutting. Struck from worn dies,
Uncirculated with traces of lustre on both sides. Purchased from Colin Cooke, 12-5-1983,
£ 26.
|
355 |
|
1848/7 |
Victoria. BMC 1532. 8 over 7 in the date. An exceptionally clear overstrike. Extremely
Fine or better, with lustre traces on the reverse. There is a natural raised line flaw to
the left of DEI, which runs from the rim to the forehead. (We mention this in case it
appears as a scratch on the picture, which it is not.) Very scarce so clear. Purchased
from Colin Cooke, 17-5-1983, £ 16.

1856 |
Victoria. BMC -- . (See note in Peck, page 409, following the date listing, where he
refers to this coin and others similar.) Bronzed current specimen. It has all the
appearance of a Bronzed Proof. Interestingly, all the obverse lettering and date, but not
the portrait, is very slightly double-struck; clearly an example of a double-struck die
rather than a double-struck coin. FDC, a superb example. Extremely rare, an important
coin. Purchased from Colin Cooke, 21-1-1991, £ 65.

1858/7 |
Victoria. Compare with BMC 1548. 8 over 7 in the date. All datal figures are much smaller
than usual. As such, this is unrecorded, or perhaps it would be wiser to say
"previously unnoticed". Good Extremely Fine, toned, with prooflike flans.
Extremely rare. Purchased from B. A. Seaby, 21-3-1979. (Note: May be compared with item
373 in this collection, which is the normal Large Date type.) (Interestingly, there is a
similar variety for the 1858 farthing, also unrecorded in main texts.)

373 |
|
1858/7 |
Victoria. Similar to BMC 1548. 8 over 7 in the date. All datal figures are normal,
"Large Date" type. Colon stops on the reverse are very much larger than usual, a
feature that is hitherto unrecorded. Almost Uncirculated with traces of lustre on both
sides. The normal 8/7 is scarce in high grade, this variety with larger colons is possibly
of far greater rarity. Purchased from Colin Cooke, 4-6-1982, £ 13.

Victoria. BMC -- . A uniface, "Splash" or Trial Strike of the 1838 Halfpenny
obverse. With additional three beads just below the 8. On a wafer thin flan, possibly in
lead with a coppery colour or wash applied, or possibly on a thin copper flan, now toning.
Good Very Fine or better, most likely as struck. Probably Unique. Purchased from Colin

1849 |
Victoria. BMC -- . This coin is from Peck's collection. He describes it in a footnote on
Page 408 of BMC, as follows: "A bronzed current piece occurs (P) with the forged
date, 1849, made by alteration of the last two figures of another date". Dr Nicholson
notes:
"The coin itself has Reverse B and so must originally have borne a date between
1851 and 1857. This is why Peck insisted that both of the last two numbers must
have been altered. This forgery was presumably done for the 'benefit' of
coillectors."
Extremely Fine, most unusual and interesting, the date 1849 non-existent in the Halfpenny
series.

Victoria. BMC 1768. Freeman 281 (R17). Breastplate details are in relief, not incuse.
Hence Fremman 281 and not Freeman 287. "Copper" Proof, though Peck lists as a
Bronze Proof. Listed as Bronze Proof in Peck but as a Copper Proof in Freeman. Peck's
notes on Page 418 claim it is impossible to tell the difference between the two finishes,
whereas Freeman, on Page 18 (and earlier) claims there is a difference that he attempts to
describe. We leave it for the collector to decide which of the two is correct. Edge flaw

Ex E. M. H. Norweb,
Spink Coin Auction 59, 17-6-1987, Lot 1785, (knock down price was £150 plus premiums
extra), listed therein simply as "Proof". Footnote:
Dr Nicholson purchased Lot 1786 (not 1785) in the Norweb sale, (knock down price was
£160 plus premiums extra), bidding there in person. Lot 1786 is listed as
"Proof Halfpenny, BMC 1772, Freeman 287 (ex his sale, Lot 105"). We do not
know who bought Lot 1785 but perhaps Spink can find out in their records and help to put
right an error that has occurred. It is now very clear that the two coins for Lots 1785
and 1786 were swapped in their envelopes, possibly during the auction viewing. Dr
Nicholson took home what he thought was, and subsequently recorded in his notes as,
Freeman 287 but it is definitely Freeman 281 from the previous lot in the Norweb sale.
This is confirmed by two facts: a) an absence of the verdigris spot on the edge of the
photographed Freeman 287 coin, (though it does not re-appear in the alternative Norweb
Lot, which might mean it was very carefully removed) and more positively b) the exact
description of the rim flaw on the edge of the coin which can just be seen in the
photograph but which is abundantly obvious on the actual coin now being offered for
sale. This last piece of evidence is conclusive proof that the two Norweb coins were
swapped over either at the time of the Norweb sale or possibly when Spink bought both of
these two coins directly out of the Freeman sale, before they were sold on to Norweb, or
indeed, when Norweb owned them. Certainly, whoever bought Lot 1785 out of Norweb has
actually ended up with Lot 1786, by design or accident. If the owner happens to read
this, or indeed if Spink notice these comments, it may be possible to rectify the error
before future numismatists come up against the problem of a wrongly attributed
coin.)

1865/3 |
Victoria. BMC -- . Freeman -- . As an overdate, it is extremely rare anyway. But this coin
has the numerals 101 scratched on either side of the bust and is therefore probably
unique. See Graham Dyer's article for a full discussion of all such numbered pieces.
("Numbered Strikings of Victorian Bronze Coins, 1860 - 1868" by G. P. Dyer,
Former Librarian and Curator at the Royal Mint, British Numismatic Journal, Volume 52
(1982). Mr Dyer wrote to this cataloguer about this coin, confirming there was no reason
to suppose it was a fabrication, even though the numbers portrayed did not fit exactly
into the theory he propounds in his article, in which he knew there were other anomolies
in any case. This letter was forwarded to Dr Nicholson and it is hoped one day that the
letter will re-surface, perhaps during spring-cleaning. For the time being, the letter is
mis-laid. Brilliant Uncirculated, almost full lustre. Extremely rare for the overdate in
this grade, with the numbered surface it is probably unique. It is being sold here as
simply the 1865/3 overdate type and the estimate is in line with this. Purchased from
Colin Cooke, 11-5-1992, who acquired it from an old collection of quality Victorian copper
and bronze coins but where this piece was not attributed as anything other than 1865/3.
