The Dr. Basil Nicholson Collection
Part 5 (1838-1901)

Item Picture Date DESCRIPTION
344 image 1838 Victoria. BMC 1522. Uncirculated with full lustre, very lightly toning. Purchased from Aston Coins, 12-2-1981, £27.
345 image 1839 Victoria. BMC 1523. Bronzed Proof. Reverse upright. A few, extremely minor surface marks, Practically FDC. Purchased from Dolphin Coins List 1, item 597, 25-2-1991, £120 (miscatalogued as a Copper Proof).
346 image 1839/43 Victoria. Compare with BMC 1523. 39 struck over 43 in the date. Reverse upright. Collectors are not generally aware that 1839 Proof Sets were made to order by the Royal Mint in years later than that stated on the coin. By the mid-1840s, it was deemed that the 1839 halfpenny die was no longer serviceable, for whatever reason, and therefore an 1843 halfpenny die was employed, suitably altered. Traces of this altered date are visible on close inspection. The Royal Mint have confirmed that altered dates may exist in the Proofs. A few, light surface marks, Good Extremely Fine, extremely rare. Purchased from Spink Numismatic Circular, September 1985, item 5922, £125.
347 image 1841 Victoria. BMC 1524. Lowest limb of E in DEI is broken to resemble F. Uncirculated with full lustre, very lightly toning. Purchased from Colin Cooke, 4-9-1981, £30.
348 image 1841 Victoria. BMC -- . Lowest limb of E in DEI is broken to resemble F. The reverse is Inverted, not recorded in the main texts. Dr Nicholson notes: "A similar coin surfaced in Spink Numismatic Circular, Dec 1984 item 8031 (repeated December 1994, presumably same coin, item 8213) described as "only VF but apparently unrecorded and very rare"." Our further researches indicate some more references: Spink Numismatic Circular, October 1969, Page 332 (photo), by Mr Radage. Spink Numismatic Circular, May 1973, article by Paul Withers. British Numismatic Journal, Volume 36 (1967), wherein Peck added the example owned by Mr E. H. White, London, in red mint condition. Some of these references will undoubtedly refer to the same coin. We leave it to the next owner of this coin to rationalise the references quoted above and determine how many examples are extant. Uncirculated with red mint lustre on both sides. Extremely rare. Purchased from Spink Coin Auction 20, 31-3-1982, Lot 466, £70.
349 image 1841 Victoria. BMC 1526 (this coin listed "B" in Peck). Bronzed Copper Proof. Reverse upright. One or two almost imperceptible carbon spots, otherwise FDC. Extremely rare.

Ex A. H. F. Baldwin, June 1964.

Ex E. M. H. Norweb, Spink Coin Auction 48, 13-11-1985, Lot 655, £235.
350 image 1843 Victoria. BMC 1527. Good Extremely Fine, a few edge knocks. Slight lustre on the obverse, reverse toned. A very rare date. Purchased from Colin Cooke, 14-11-1990, £45.
351 image 1844 Victoria. BMC 1528. Uncirculated with traces of lustre. Exceptionally well-struck. Scarce in this grade. Purchased from Colin Cooke, 12-5-1983, £ 30.
352 image 1845 Victoria. BMC 1529. Uncirculated with full lustre, very lightly toning. Excessively rare in this grade. It is quite likely that this is the finest example extant.

Ex Hopetoun House, Spink Coin Auction 68, 22-3-1989, Lot 665.

Ex Walter Whittall (Shrewsbury), collection purchased by Colin Cooke, 1989-91. Purchased from Colin Cooke, 26-12-1990, £375.
343 image 1846 Victoria. BMC 2082. Pattern Two Cents in Copper by Marrian and Gausby. Reverse inverted, therefore an original striking and not one of the much commoner re-strikes. Thickness 2mm. Well struck. No rust. Very Fine or better, small edge knock at 10pm on the obverse, patchily toning. Extremely rare as an original striking. Purchased from Aston Coins, 3-4-1982, Extremely Fine, £55.
353 image 1846 Victoria. BMC 1530. Uncirculated with full lustre, lightly toning. A beautiful coin. Very rare in this condition. Purchased from D. Barney, 19-6-1979, £13.
354 image 1847 Victoria. BMC 1531. Dr Nicholson notes that there is a "Large 7 in the date". To this cataloguer, it does not appear overly large, as close inspection reveals the 7 is re-entered on the die over a somewhat lower 7, thereby creating the illusion of being larger than usual. The coin exhibits no actual wear but is clearly struck from worn dies and the Mint deemed it necessary to re-inforce the datal figure by re-cutting. Struck from worn dies, Uncirculated with traces of lustre on both sides. Purchased from Colin Cooke, 12-5-1983, £ 26.
355 image 1848/7 Victoria. BMC 1532. 8 over 7 in the date. An exceptionally clear overstrike. Extremely Fine or better, with lustre traces on the reverse. There is a natural raised line flaw to the left of DEI, which runs from the rim to the forehead. (We mention this in case it appears as a scratch on the picture, which it is not.) Very scarce so clear. Purchased from Colin Cooke, 17-5-1983, £ 16.
356 image 1848 Victoria. BMC 1533. Not over 7 and as such, this is much rarer than most catalogues suggest. One or two small areas of discolouration, nearly Extremely Fine. Rare. Purchased from Colin Cooke, 12-5-1983, £ 38.
357 image 1851 Victoria. BMC 1535. Reverse B with dots on shield. Uncirculated with full lustre, very lightly toning. Purchased from Colin Cooke, 17-5-1983, £ 30. (Note: Dr Nicholson had two examples of this coin in his collection, this and item 358. This piece he had inadvertently labelled as Reverse A.)
358 image 1851 Victoria. BMC 1535. Reverse B with dots on shield. Uncirculated with full lustre, very lightly toning. Purchased from Colin Cooke, 12-5-1983, £ 30. (Note: Dr Nicholson had two examples of this coin in his collection, this and item 357, which inadvertently had been labelled as Reverse A.)
359 image 1852 Victoria. BMC 1536. Reverse A with no dots on shield. Extremely Fine/Good Extremely Fine, mostly toned. Purchased from Colin Cooke, 12-5-1983, £ 21.
360 image 1852 Victoria. BMC 1537. Reverse B with dots on shield. Also with 8 over a lower 8 in the date. A small, raised line flaw to the left of the date, as commonly found on coins of this period. Good Extremely Fine, mostly toned. Purchased from Colin Cooke, 17-5-1983, £ 30.
361 image 1853/2 Victoria. BMC 1538. 3 over 2 in the date. Several carbon spots and a light fingerprint on the reverse, a central area on the obverse a little darker in tone than the periphery, Uncirculated with full lustre, extremely rare in this grade.

Ex Spink 1992, to Dr Aitken.

Ex Dr Terry Aitken (Canada) 5-6-1996, collection purchased by Colin Cooke.
362 image 1853 Victoria. BMC 1539. A few minor contact marks, Uncirculated with almost full mint lustre. Purchased from Colin Cooke, 4-1-1991, £ 28.
363 image 1853 Victoria. BMC 1541. Copper Proof. Reverse upright. FDC. A superb example with pinkish peripheral colouring. Purchased from Spink Numismatic Circular, March 1983, item 1181, £150.
364 image 1854 Victoria. BMC 1542. Uncirculated with full lustre, very lightly toning on the obverse. An exceptional coin in this condition. Purchased from Colin Cooke, 12-5-1983, £ 24.
365 image 1855 Victoria. BMC 1543. Uncirculated with full lustre, very lightly toning. Rare in such fine preservation. Purchased from Colin Cooke, 12-5-1983, £ 38.
366 image 1856 Victoria. BMC 1544. A few light carbon spots on the obverse, Uncirculated with full lustre, lightly toning on the reverse. Extremely rare in this condition. Purchased from Colin Cooke, 12-5-1983, £ 35.
367 image 1856 Victoria. BMC -- . (See note in Peck, page 409, following the date listing, where he refers to this coin and others similar.) Bronzed current specimen. It has all the appearance of a Bronzed Proof. Interestingly, all the obverse lettering and date, but not the portrait, is very slightly double-struck; clearly an example of a double-struck die rather than a double-struck coin. FDC, a superb example. Extremely rare, an important coin. Purchased from Colin Cooke, 21-1-1991, £ 65.
368 image 1857 Victoria. BMC 1545. Reverse B with dots on the shield. Extremely Fine or better with traces of lustre on both sides. Purchased from Laurie Bamford, 31-5-1979, £8.
369 image 1857 Victoria. BMC 1546. Reverse A with no dots on the shield. Uncirculated with almost full mint lustre. A most attractive example. Purchased from Colin Cooke, 14-1-1992, £ 36.
370 image 1858/6 Victoria. BMC 1547. 8 over 6 in the date. Extremely Fine, rare. Date and place of acquisition are uncertain. (Note: Two different dies for this variety in Dr Nicholson's collection, this coin and coin 371 .)
371 image 1858/6 Victoria. BMC1547. 8 over 6 in the date. Almost Uncirculated with quite good lustre on both sides. Very rare in this condition. Purchased from Colin Cooke, 12-5-1983, £ 34.
372 image 1858/7 Victoria. Compare with BMC 1548. 8 over 7 in the date. All datal figures are much smaller than usual. As such, this is unrecorded, or perhaps it would be wiser to say "previously unnoticed". Good Extremely Fine, toned, with prooflike flans. Extremely rare. Purchased from B. A. Seaby, 21-3-1979. (Note: May be compared with item 373 in this collection, which is the normal Large Date type.) (Interestingly, there is a similar variety for the 1858 farthing, also unrecorded in main texts.)
373 image 1858/7 Victoria. Similar to BMC 1548. 8 over 7 in the date. All datal figures are normal, "Large Date" type. Colon stops on the reverse are very much larger than usual, a feature that is hitherto unrecorded. Almost Uncirculated with traces of lustre on both sides. The normal 8/7 is scarce in high grade, this variety with larger colons is possibly of far greater rarity. Purchased from Colin Cooke, 4-6-1982, £ 13.
374 image 1858 Victoria. BMC 1549. Normal, large datal figures. Uncirculated with full lustre, very lightly toning. Rare in such fine preservation. Purchased from Simon Porter, 4-5-1981, £22.
375 image 1859/8 Victoria. BMC 1550. 9 over 8 in the date. Uncirculated with some lustre on both sides. Rare in such high grade. Purchased from Colin Cooke, 12-5-1983, £ 38. (Note: there are two different dies for this overdate in the Dr Nicholson collection. See also coin 376.)
376 image 1859/8 Victoria. BMC 1550. 9 over 8 in the date. Uncirculated with subdued, even lustre on both sides. A light fingerprint stain on the obverse. Rare in such high grade. (Note: there are two different dies for this overdate in the Dr Nicholson collection. See also coin 375.)
377 image 1859 Victoria. BMC 1551. Plain 9, not an overdate. Uncirculated with good lustre. Rare in this condition. Purchased from Colin Cooke, 12-5-1983, £ 30.
378 image 1860 Victoria. Copper issue. Copper Proof. BMC 1552. This is the finest of the very few examples that have appeared on the market in the last 30 years. Practically FDC. Extremely rare. Purchased Spink Numismatic Circular, Feb 1992, item 268, £1700.
379 image 1838 ? Victoria. BMC -- . A uniface, "Splash" or Trial Strike of the 1838 Halfpenny obverse. With additional three beads just below the 8. On a wafer thin flan, possibly in lead with a coppery colour or wash applied, or possibly on a thin copper flan, now toning. Good Very Fine or better, most likely as struck. Probably Unique. Purchased from Colin Cooke, 10-9-1979, £ 65.
380 image 1849 Victoria. BMC -- . This coin is from Peck's collection. He describes it in a footnote on Page 408 of BMC, as follows: "A bronzed current piece occurs (P) with the forged date, 1849, made by alteration of the last two figures of another date". Dr Nicholson notes: "The coin itself has Reverse B and so must originally have borne a date between 1851 and 1857. This is why Peck insisted that both of the last two numbers must have been altered. This forgery was presumably done for the 'benefit' of coillectors." Extremely Fine, most unusual and interesting, the date 1849 non-existent in the Halfpenny series.

Ex C. W. Peck collection. Purchased from Colin Cooke, circa 1992.

391 image 1860 Victoria. BMC -- . Freeman 263 (R18). Bronze Proof. Toothed Border. Practically FDC, extremely rare. Not in BMC. (PCGS graded as PR65 in USA.) Purchased from Superior Galleries Auction, 11-12-1993, New York, Lot 1228, on commission.
392 image 1861 Victoria. BMC 1768. Freeman 281 (R17). Breastplate details are in relief, not incuse. Hence Fremman 281 and not Freeman 287. "Copper" Proof, though Peck lists as a Bronze Proof. Listed as Bronze Proof in Peck but as a Copper Proof in Freeman. Peck's notes on Page 418 claim it is impossible to tell the difference between the two finishes, whereas Freeman, on Page 18 (and earlier) claims there is a difference that he attempts to describe. We leave it for the collector to decide which of the two is correct. Edge flaw on the edge and near the rim below the date, otherwise Practically FDC, very rare.

Ex C. W. Peck collection.

Ex M. J. Freeman, Christies 23-10-1984, Lot 101, £160, listed therein as a Copper Proof.

Ex E. M. H. Norweb, Spink Coin Auction 59, 17-6-1987, Lot 1785, (knock down price was £150 plus premiums extra), listed therein simply as "Proof". Footnote: Dr Nicholson purchased Lot 1786 (not 1785) in the Norweb sale, (knock down price was £160 plus premiums extra), bidding there in person. Lot 1786 is listed as "Proof Halfpenny, BMC 1772, Freeman 287 (ex his sale, Lot 105"). We do not know who bought Lot 1785 but perhaps Spink can find out in their records and help to put right an error that has occurred. It is now very clear that the two coins for Lots 1785 and 1786 were swapped in their envelopes, possibly during the auction viewing. Dr Nicholson took home what he thought was, and subsequently recorded in his notes as, Freeman 287 but it is definitely Freeman 281 from the previous lot in the Norweb sale. This is confirmed by two facts: a) an absence of the verdigris spot on the edge of the photographed Freeman 287 coin, (though it does not re-appear in the alternative Norweb Lot, which might mean it was very carefully removed) and more positively b) the exact description of the rim flaw on the edge of the coin which can just be seen in the photograph but which is abundantly obvious on the actual coin now being offered for sale. This last piece of evidence is conclusive proof that the two Norweb coins were swapped over either at the time of the Norweb sale or possibly when Spink bought both of these two coins directly out of the Freeman sale, before they were sold on to Norweb, or indeed, when Norweb owned them. Certainly, whoever bought Lot 1785 out of Norweb has actually ended up with Lot 1786, by design or accident. If the owner happens to read this, or indeed if Spink notice these comments, it may be possible to rectify the error before future numismatists come up against the problem of a wrongly attributed coin.)
393 image 1861 Victoria. BMC 1768. Freeman 281 (R17). Breastplate details are in relief, not incuse. Hence it is Freeman 281 and not Freeman 287. Bronze Proof. Listed as Bronze Proof in Peck but as a Copper Proof in Freeman. Peck's notes on Page 418 claim it is impossible to tell the difference between the two finishes, whereas Freeman, on Page 18 (and earlier) claims there is a difference that he attempts to describe. 423 image 1865/3 Victoria. BMC -- . Freeman -- . As an overdate, it is extremely rare anyway. But this coin has the numerals 101 scratched on either side of the bust and is therefore probably unique. See Graham Dyer's article for a full discussion of all such numbered pieces. ("Numbered Strikings of Victorian Bronze Coins, 1860 - 1868" by G. P. Dyer, Former Librarian and Curator at the Royal Mint, British Numismatic Journal, Volume 52 (1982). Mr Dyer wrote to this cataloguer about this coin, confirming there was no reason to suppose it was a fabrication, even though the numbers portrayed did not fit exactly into the theory he propounds in his article, in which he knew there were other anomolies in any case. This letter was forwarded to Dr Nicholson and it is hoped one day that the letter will re-surface, perhaps during spring-cleaning. For the time being, the letter is mis-laid. Brilliant Uncirculated, almost full lustre. Extremely rare for the overdate in this grade, with the numbered surface it is probably unique. It is being sold here as simply the 1865/3 overdate type and the estimate is in line with this. Purchased from Colin Cooke, 11-5-1992, who acquired it from an old collection of quality Victorian copper and bronze coins but where this piece was not attributed as anything other than 1865/3.
